Botox and Fillers Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Most hair removal treatments are painful, time-consuming, and some last only a week or two. Laser hair removal is a no-nonsense, no-hassle addition to any beauty regimen, which is why it's fast becoming one of America's most popular cosmetic procedures.

Laser hair removal uses light energy to damage the hair follicles, inhibiting hair growth. Although not permanent, it is a long-term treatment, and many people find that they have significantly less hair regrowth for months and even years afterward.

Wellness Medical Center and Spa uses Cynosure's state-of-the-art Vectus® laser for fast, effective hair removal.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal cleverly uses the hair's pigmentation (color) against itself. Your provider applies cooling gel to the treatment area and then presses a handheld laser against your skin. The laser passes through your skin to the hair follicle. The pigment in the hair absorbs the light's energy, where it converts to heat, damaging the follicle and temporarily preventing it from growing hair effectively.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Some people say they feel an uncomfortable pinprick sensation during the laser treatment, although the cooling gel typically helps with this. For larger areas, your provider may suggest you apply a topical numbing cream to the area beforehand.

It's normal for the skin to appear red and swollen for the first few hours after the treatment. Holding an ice pack against the treatment area helps, and you can also take over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary.

Between treatments and immediately after especially, avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds because your skin is extra sensitive to light, and you'll likely burn. To be safe, wear at least SPF30 broad-spectrum sunscreen, even on cloudy days.

How long does a laser hair removal treatment take?

For smaller areas, such as the upper lip or under the arm, laser hair removal takes just a few minutes. For larger areas, like the back or legs, it may take an hour or more.

Most people see long-term results within 2-6 sessions, and how long you leave between treatments depends on the area. Hair grows quickly on the upper lip, so you may need to come back every one to two months. On the other hand, back hair grows slowly, so you can leave it as long as three to four months.
