What is IPL?

IPL is a cosmetic treatment that uses light therapy to improve the skin's appearance and remove unwanted hair. Known as a photofacial, IPL has become a favorite treatment at Wellness Medical Center and Spa thanks to its skin-rejuvenating properties. The therapy revitalizes sun-damaged skin, reversing the effects of photoaging.

Wellness Medical Center and Spa uses the advanced Palomar Icon™ IPL system to support beautiful, glowing skin.

How does IPL work?

IPL delivers multiple wavelengths of light energy to targeted areas of the body. Your provider passes a handheld laser over the treatment area, emitting pulses of light that travel into the skin, addressing the concern at a molecular level. The heat stimulates collagen, breaks down skin pigmentation, and inhibits hair growth.

What are the benefits of an IPL treatment?

Light energy improves the texture and appearance of skin without surgery. The team at Wellness Medical Center and Spa uses it to treat a broad range of skin and hair concerns, including:

  • Sun damage
  • Birthmarks
  • Rosacea
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Varicose veins
  • Stretchmarks
  • Acne
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Hair removal

IPL can treat any skin area, but it's most commonly used to treat the face because it leaves no trace.

What happens during an IPL treatment?

Your provider applies a cool gel onto the treatment area before holding the IPL device against the skin. Each session lasts 20-60 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated.

Many people report feeling a sharp stinging pain during treatment, like the pinging of a rubber band against their skin. If you have concerns, speak with your provider about having a numbing cream applied beforehand.

What is recovery like after an IPL treatment?

It's normal for your skin to appear red and swollen for up to eight hours post-treatment. Many people liken it to looking and feeling like sunburn. Your skin will be more sensitive than usual, so avoid hot water, direct sunlight, and tanning beds, and wear a minimum of SPF30 broad-spectrum sunscreen until your skin heals.

You should also keep your skin clear from all creams, lotions, and makeup for 24 hours after treatment, after which time you should apply moisturizer twice a day, every day, for 12 weeks.
